During 2023, second year social work students from Ara – Te Pūkenga looked at the issues creating barriers to school attendance for tamariki in our area. They found that some of the barriers included:
- Transport
- Bullying
- Undiagnosed learning disabilities (and the bullying facing the tamariki as a result)
- Poverty and housing insecurity – lack of money to pay for the essentials like school uniforms
- Access to assessments for learning disabilities
